Frequently Asked Questions

About Water Purifiers

Q - Why do I need a water purifier in my home?

Every home absolutely needs a water purifier for both drinking water AND showering and bathing. No matter where you live, there are contaminants in your raw water.

If you live in a city, the water treatment plant is adding chlorine to your water to prevent illness from bacteria and toxic algae. Other chemicals are added for other reasons. It is up to you to remove the chemicals at the point of use with a water purification system to protect yourself from the serious long term effects of these poisons.

Chlorine in water may have caused suffering and early death for millions over the last 100 years. Chlorine readily combines with other compounds, including natural ones, to form new harmful toxins.

For example THM's (trihalomethanes) and MX's (unknown mutagens) are present in virtually every chlorinated water supply. THM's, developed from the combination of chlorine with humic acids from decayed organic matter such as leaves in the source water, is highly carcinogenic.

A U.S. Council of Environmental Quality study states, "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine."

Q - What about bottled water?

Bottled water is not the answer. There are no standards for how "pure" bottled water should be other than occasional testing for bacteria at bottling sites. How has the equipment been maintained? Is it truly purified water in the bottle?

Much of bottled water is spring water that is not run through a water filter at all. Some is city water filtered simply to remove the taste of chlorine, that still has fluoride and other chemicals in it.

How long has the water been stored in inventory? Bacteria can be growing in it.  And bottled water is very expensive.

The most convenient and effective way to have good quality water is to set up your own water purifiers or water filters in your kitchen and bathroom.  Why not have a water purification system that gives you the best water economically?

With your own pure water system you can have dependably safe water, really pure water, for a cent or two per gallon.

Q - What is KDF?

"Kinetic Degradation Fluxion" utilizes an all-natural process in which the "dissimilar" metals copper and zinc are used to create a kinetic charge from the flow of the water through them, that kills microorganisms and alters or removes many problem contaminants. It also conditions water with a "softening" effect.

Q - What is special about KDF?

In 1987 this exciting breakthrough technology for water purification was discovered. Developed and designed by a leading American scientist, this KDF media has been awarded both U.S. and international patents.

KDF has been proven to be the best way to remove major contaminants from our water, and shown to stay active longer than any other purification method.  The result is better water than bottled water, at a fraction of the cost.

Q - Is there independent verification that KDF is effective?

In August, 1992, KDF was awarded the U.S. E. P. A.'s approval as a "pesticidal device", which means it has the ability to kill algae, bacteria (including Pseudomonas florescens, Ybrio cholera, Legionella pneumophilia, and coliforms), fungus, mold, and many parasites and viruses found in drinking water supplies, through the natural process known as "electrochemical oxidation/reduction".

KDF has also been certified by independent water purification authorities to kill a target bacteria within the "less than 1 minute contact time" required to be effective in point-of-use water filters. Thus it is "bacteriacidal", a much preferred classification to that of "bacteriostatic", a term often used with filters impregnated with silver, which only slightly retards bacterial growth.

NOTE: KDF is a relatively expensive substance.  Our water purifiers have the substantial amount of KDF needed to do a thorough job.   There are other brands, some with the same kind of housing as ours, that contain only a small amount of KDF so they may say they have it.  These will do a lesser job for a shorter time than ours.

Q - How does KDF help carbon?

When KDF technology is combined with high-quality coconut shell granular activated carbon, the KDF protects the carbon from rapid exhaustion with chlorine by handling the chlorine first, thus allowing the carbon to have a much longer effective life.  KDF has about 10 times the active life of carbon that is not protected like this.

Q - What will KDF & carbon do?

KDF & carbon working together are proven effective against microorganisms, chlorine, heavy metals, (aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, mercury, etc.), hydrogen sulfide, nitrates, odor, poor taste, THM's, PCB's, dioxin, and thousands of other organic chemicals and inorganic poisons, for an extended time, . . . at the minimal cost of approximately one cent per gallon!

Q - Why do you suggest that a carbon block cartridge be added to the KDF & carbon?

Even more effective purification is provided by following the KDF & carbon with a sub-micron solid carbon block cartridge.  We prefer solid carbon to a ceramic cartridge. Although ceramic filters out particles as small as .4 microns, our newer high-pressure treated solid carbon block cartridge screens down to .2 micron.  Also, the extra carbon extends the effectiveness of the system as a whole in removing organic pesticides and other chemicals.

Filtering to less than .5 micron eliminates parasites and many bacteria which may be present in water.  Most of these that survive the chlorine added by cities, are killed by the KDF, but it is still desirable to remove them all.

Q - Why is your system better than bottled water?

While bottled water may be an improvement over chlorinated tap water, any onsite point-of-use or point-of-entry water treatment with a well-maintained system would be preferable over bottled water, which is clearly unreliable and expensive.

You never know the quality of purchased bottled water. It may be inadequately filtered or not at all. It may have been sitting in a warehouse or on a shelf for many weeks before you buy it.

If bottled water has been purified, how often have the cartridges been changed in the purifying system? The same question may be raised about pure water dispensing machines. These usually use reverse osmosis, which is not as healthy as well-filtered water anyway.

With point-of-use purification you know what you are getting, and the cost per gallon is vastly lower than with bottled water.

Q - Why do you consider your system the best choice in water purification?

For the cost-conscious individual who is interested in protecting their health, KDF technology combined with high-quality coconut shell granular activated carbon offers the most attractive water purification choice when it comes to quality, value, and maintenance-free performance. Countertop and under-the-counter are available at modest cost.

For the ultimate in affordable contaminant-removal, KDF & carbon followed by a solid carbon block filter (which screens out anything larger than .2 micron) provides the best of all solutions: the very high quality water you want, . . . when you want it, . . . at a low affordable cost, . . . with an absolute minimum of service & maintenance.

NOTE: A cartridge that contains KDF and the special media "Alumina"  is available for our "Heavy Duty" units to more fully remove fluoride from city water. This should be followed with the solid carbon block in a second housing, and an alkalizer cartridge in a third housing, as Alumina tends to leave the water more acidic.

Q - What about Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)?

These would primarily be calcium, magnesium and other tiny mineral particles and ions.  A significant amount of these are removed by reverse osmosis, but not KDF and Carbon.

However, in modest amounts, these minerals are harmless, even nutritional.  If the source water is extremely hard, more likely with well water than treated city water, reverse osmosis or distillation may be the way to go.  We have these types of systems available also.

Q - What is the flow rate of your CounterTop and UnderCounter water systems?

That depends on your water pressure. With the normal home water pressure the flow through either type of system would be about a gallon per minute.

Q - When should an alkalizer be included in a water purifying system?

Both reverse osmosis and the alumina media for fluoride removal make the water more acidic. After the water passes through either of these types of purification, it is important to run the water through an alkalizer unit to remineralize it and make it more alkaline. Properly alkalized water is healthier for biological systems.

Q - How long will a shower filter last?

The effective life of our KDF shower units depends on the number and duration of showers, the quality of the water and the flow rate of the shower head used.  (Eg., At the 2.5 gallons per minute flow of the standard shower head, a 5 minute shower would use 12.5 gallons, while a 10 minute shower would consume 25 gallons.)

The Sparkling Spray II has more of the KDF media (over 1 pound) than other brands. It will take care of up to 99% of chlorine for over 2 years of showering for one person averaging a 10 minute shower per day; or over 1 year for two people each showering 10 minutes a day.

Further, this unit will condition your water for cleaner, softer, skin and hair with less soap or shampoo.

Purifiers From WaterUS.com

We have been in the water purification business for over 30 years.

We offer multiple choices for good water purification, most of them centered around KDF, because of its unique properties, effectiveness and affordability.

Our KDF & carbon water filter cartridges do a great job for one to two years depending on the volume & type of water processed.  The larger the family, or the dirtier the water, the sooner you would change the cartridge.

Clean your water of bad taste & odor, chlorine, volatile organic chemicals, heavy metals, lime and scale.  Our revolutionary process effectively clears more household water chemicals and other water problems than other types of water treatment.

The solid carbon block water cartridge used in some of our systems has an extra fine screening ability.  The pure, high-pressure solid carbon in our point-of-use systems will remove particles down to .2 micron , eliminating even very small bacteria. (This is preferable to a ceramic water filter, which usually screens only to .4 micron.)

Current prices for our complete line of quality point-of-use flow through KDF & Carbon filter systems range from $87.97 for the SlimLine Space-Saver Single CounterTop unit to $269.97 for the Heavy Duty Triple UnderCounter Unit, with KDF & Alumina.  All of our drinking water purifiers have replaceable cartridges.

Heavy Duty Dual UnderCounter Unit

One of our dual  KDF & Carbon plus Solid Carbon Block point-of-use units will effectively reduce or remove the following contaminants:

~algae  ~bacteria  ~parasites  ~mold/fungus  ~bad taste  ~bad odor  ~pesticides (eg. Endrin, Lindane, Methoxychlor, Toxaphene, etc.) ~herbicides (eg. Silvex; 2, 4-D; etc.)  ~fertilizers  ~nitrates  ~detergents  ~PCB's  ~THM's  ~arsenic ~aluminum  ~barium  ~cadmium  ~chlorine  ~chromium ~fluoride ~hydrogen sulfide ~iron  ~lead  ~mercury  ~radon ~selenium ~and many more

NOTE: For those on fluoridated city water, we have special cartridges for our "Heavy Duty" units with KDF + "Alumina", which more thoroughly eliminates fluoride.
